Skipping An Election
Nov. 2nd, 2022 12:56 pmFor those who don't follow my other journal, I had cancer surgery back in January. Came out well, but recuperation was still rough. I decided to toss various things overboard to reduce my stress level.
One thing I picked was voting. I haven't voted this year. Not in primaries. Not going to in the general.
I favor voting, even if I normally pick the losers. Sure, you're extremely unlikely to be casting the deciding vote in any election, but additional votes matter. A 60% winner has more clout than one who only won 55%, and 50%+1 politicians are marginally effective. For my usual choices, the numbers are 2%, 1%, and 0.3%, but the higher the Libertarians score the more likely a policy is to be adopted by one of the major parties.
Not voting is a noticeable reduction in stress level. Normally I'd be trying to research candidates in down-ballot races to figure out who to vote for. Now I don't care about any of them. And there's certainly plenty of other things in life for me to care about.
Yes, yes, politics still cares about me. I've heard the line. I'm still taking this year off. I've been voting since 1988. They can do without me this time.
