Red Flag Laws
Jun. 21st, 2021 04:53 pmI originally supported the concept of Red Flag Laws--having an option to report a person as dangerous, leading to the confiscation of their weapons and evaluation of how dangerous they are.
Then I saw how quickly they were abused and changed my mind.
They haven't gone away, though. Reason has an article on the latest push.
What I would support is this:
When person A petitions for a red flag restriction on person B, both A and B are brought in for a psychiatric evaluation, along with other investigations such as questioning their contacts and neighbors about dangerous behavior. If either or both are seen to be a danger, apply the restrictions. Including confiscating vehicles, because there's killings by car out there.
If the petitioner has skin in the game it'll filter out a lot of the bogus accusations. And given the personality types who make such accusations, it might get them safely off the street.
